We had the chance to talk to Sly and Matt from Punchline 13 recently. They have reformed after a 10 year lets call it lounge (we hate the word hiatus) and have dropped a new album entitled Cut the Rope which is out right now by the way. It was great learning more about these guys and look forward to catching their Pouzzafest set this year. Big thanks to Melanie Kaye PR for setting this up hope everyone enjoys!

-You formed PUNCHLINE 13 after you left MEN O’ STEEL. Recorded a EP called “The Mirror” in 2001. Then a 10 year break. What happened in those 10 years that prevented you from releasing new music?

I WROTE A LOT OF SONGS. I ALSO WORKED WITH OTHER BANDS (MANAGEMENT, PRODUCING…) I DIDN’T HAVE THE RIGHT BAND AT THE TIME. I FINALLY FOUND MY MUSIC SOULMATES.

-What made you want to get PUNCHLINE 13 back in the studio and back on stage?

I DID A COMEBACK WITH MEN’O’STEEL IN 2013 AT THE AMNESIA ROCKFEST & VANS WARPED TOUR. I FELT LIKE A JUNKIE WHO RECEIVED A FIX AFTER A 10 YEARS OF REHAB. STAGE IS MY ADDICTION. WE RECORDED AN ALBUM TO GET BACK ON STAGE AND SHARE OUR LOVE FOR MUSIC

-After a 10 year hiatus how hard was it getting used to being in a band?

PRETTY EASY WITH THESE GUYS… I AM FINALLY BACK HOME!!

-What was the recording process like during the recording of “Cut the Rope”?

THE SONGS WERE ALREADY WRITTEN. WE’VE RECORDED IN 3 DIFFERENT STUDIOS DURING 3 MONTHS & MIXED IT AT STUDIO 44 WITH ALEXIS CALVÉ WHO DID AN AWESOME JOB. EASIEST AND STRESSFREE RECORDING  PROCESS I’VE BEEN THROUGH,

-How has your song writing improved over the past 10 years?

MATURITY & CONFIDENCE…

-Going into the studio did you have a idea of how you wanted the finished product to sound? Or did you go into it with an open concept?

THIS RECORD IS THE RECORD I ALWAYS WANTED TO MAKE. I HAD AN IDEA OF THE FINAL OUTPUT IN MY HEAD AND IT CAME OUT EXACTLY LIKE I WANTED. I AM REALLY HAPPY WITH THIS RECORD… NO REGRETS AT ALL!

-In the past 10 years it seems much easier for bands to self record / distribute connect via the internet. How important are things like twitter, facebook to PUNCHLINE 13 connect with fans as well as connect with other bands?

WELL, INTERNET MADE THINGS EASIER AND TOUGHER AT THE SAME TIME. OUR RELATION WITH OUR FANS IS REALLY IMPORTANT SO YES FACEBOOK, INSTAGRAM & TWITTER ARE REALLY IMPORTANT FOR US. GOOD WAY TO STAY CONNECTED WITH FANS AND THE INDUSTRY. BUT I STILL THINK THAT THE BEST WAY TO CONNECT WITH PEOPLE IS BY DOING SHOWS.

-When you look back on your first release and the success that it garnered do you ever think….what could have happened if you just kept on course ?

WELL I’M NOT LOOKING BACKWARD. SO MAYBE LIFE WOULD OF BEEN DIFFERENT BUT EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON. WE ARE WHERE WE SHOULD BE RIGHT NOW! & LIFE IS AWESOME.

-Since reforming the band what has been some hurdles you have came up against? Do you find it tough trying to get that momentum back?

NOT REALLY… I THINK THE MOMENTUM IS PRETTY GOOD RIGHT NOW. OF COURSE SOME PEOPLE ARE ASKING WHY WE ARE BACK… MY ANSWER IS SIMPLE… WHY NOT? WE ARE AUTHENTIC. I’M WRITTING THE SAME KIND OF SONGS SINCE 1988.
SO AGAIN, WHY NOT?

-You guys will be playing will be playing Pouzzafest this year. Who are you excited to check out this year?

THE NILS, KNAPSACK, COUNTERPUNCH, TEENAGE BOTTLEROCKET…

-Whats up next for PUNCHLINE 13 ?

LOTS OF SHOWS, FESTIVALS & AWESOME OPPORTUNITIES. WE ARE LAUNCHING A NEW SINGLE AND VIDEO IN JUNE. WE ARE ALSO RECORDING A SONG WITH OUR LABEL MATE MR. JAH CUTTA… STAY TUNED.

-Before we say good bye I want to say thank you for taking the time to answer our questions. Do you have any final nuggets of info for us?

HEY! THANKS FOR HAVING US! LOTS OF SECRETS I CAN’T TELL… HAHA! STAY TUNED & FOLLOW US ON FACEBOOK, INSTAGRAM & TWITTER.
